Position Overview

The Lead Certified Medical Assistant (Lead CMA) is a supervisory clinical role responsible for overseeing the day-to-day clinical activities of the medical assistant team, supporting medical staff, and ensuring the delivery of exceptional patient care. This position requires a seasoned CMA professional who can balance hands-on clinical duties with team leadership, mentorship, and administrative oversight to maintain the highest standards of care and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily clinical activities of Certified Medical Assistants and support staff
  • Serve as a primary point of contact and resource for CMA team members
  • Mentor and train new clinical staff, ensuring adherence to facility protocols and best practices
  • Monitor team performance and provide constructive feedback and coaching
  • Assist management with performance evaluations and staff development planning
  • Lead patient service initiatives and quality improvement efforts within the clinical team

Advanced Patient Care

  • Obtain and document patient vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and weight
  • Assist physicians and providers with examinations, clinical procedures, and minor surgical procedures
  • Administer injections, perform phlebotomy, conduct EKGs, and other diagnostic procedures
  • Prepare and maintain examination rooms and ensure equipment readiness
  • Handle escalated or complex patient care situations under provider supervision

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately document patient encounters, clinical findings, and care plans in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system
  • Ensure team compliance with all HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards
  • Enforce OSHA guidelines, infection control protocols, and safety standards across the clinical team
  • Oversee accurate scheduling, referral coordination, and administrative workflow within the department

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program
  • Current CMA certification through AAMA, AMT, or equivalent
  • Current CPR/BLS certification
  • Minimum 3 years of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical setting
  • Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Preferred

  • BLS/ACLS certification
  • Prior experience leading or supervising a clinical team
  • Familiarity with quality improvement and patient service initiatives
  • Experience in a high-volume outpatient or multi-specialty clinical environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain on feet for extended periods throughout the shift
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures
  • Visual and auditory acuity necessary to assess patient conditions and supervise staff
